So it should come as no surprise that Idealab founder Bill Gross, no stranger to the startup community, believes timing is the most important factor in determining whether a startup will succeed.

Any comedian will tell you the secret to comedy is timing. You could have the funniest line ever, but if you’re timing’s off it will fall flat. Even comedic concepts are subject to this law. “Blazing Saddles” and “Animal House,” two of the funniest comedies – and most profitable, by the way – wouldn’t even get produced today. In this TED talk he discusses how (and why) he came to this conclusion. If you’re thinking about or are in the process of launching a startup you may want to watch this video.
