I have no idea whether my friend Grail authored the thoughts expressed below. I read them on the printed memorial cards distributed at her wake. I DO know she lived these words every moment of her Earthly existence, which came to an end all-too-soon and suddenly on July 8, 2015. I share them tonight because this is how I will live every moment of MY LIFE going forward until it’s time for me to make my similar transition.
“Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
“And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the Universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be.
“And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be Cheerful. Strive to be happy.”
From the moment I met Grail in high school some 35-plus years ago, I knew what it meant to be in the presence of a Whirlwind Spirit. It occurs to me now that I need more Whirlwind Spirits in my life today, not fewer, and that I need to adopt more of that Whirlwind Spirit myself. And so I shall.
